Gossypium, a leading ethical clothing company in the UK, highlights the growing need to re-establish the link between textiles and agriculture. Up until the 1950s all textiles and clothing produced anywhere in the world were made from natural fibres. Since then there has been a rapid growth in the use of man made fibres. The figures are stark in 1970, 45% of production was from man made fibres, by 2000 it had risen to 83%. Gossypium puts cotton farmers at the heart of their business. The cotton that the products are made from comes from small scale farmers in the Kutch area in India who, like many smallholders supplying the world cotton market, have experienced real hardship because of falling cotton prices exacerbated by US and EU subsidies. As many as 100 million rural households are globally involved in cotton production and millions of small scale cotton farmers are increasingly at the mercy of falling and volatile world market prices and facing immense hardship. Gossypium wants people to understand that their clothes play a significant part in their ecological footprint. Fast fashion by its nature requires cheap textiles that are flown in from abroad and promotes a throw away culture. ecoHaven has a range of Gossypium and other organic and/or fairtrade clothes.
