Shiatsu

In a shiatsu treatment the energy flow through the meridians is balanced, and this allows the receiver to feel more whole, harmonious and integrated. Shiatsu is wonderfully flexible and geared towards the specific needs of each receiver.

Restore health

Treating the body as a whole helps to restore the functions of the nervous system, the circulation system, the respiratory system, bones, muscles and internal secretion and stimulates the natural healing power that people already possess.

What is shiatsu?

“Shiatsu technique refers to the use of fingers and palm of one’s hand to apply pressure to particular sections on the surface of the body for the purposes of correcting imbalances of the body and for maintaining and promoting health.”
(Japanese medical department of Ministry of Welfare in Dec 1957)

The Traditional Chinese Medicine theory proposes that energy known as “Ki” moves through the body along well defined pathways called meridians. The meridians are the expression of the “oneness” between mind and body – what is happening in our thoughts and feelings is communicated through the meridian and occur as symptoms or sensations expressed by the body. This is how the body becomes a "picture" of what is happening for us internally.

Shiatsu is an evolving therapy incorporating aspects of Japanese massage traditions, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western anatomy and physiology. TCM is a science designed to help us understand that we are part of nature, and provides a valuable context for considering lifesyle and nourishment.

The shiatsu session

A shiatsu session involves diagnosis through touch, observations and questions and the treatment involves restoring the flow of Ki through the meridians using touch and stretches; dietary and lifestyle advice may also be offered. A session may last one and a half hours and the receiver wears loose clothing.

Shiatsu sessions are available with Lynne Bradshaw at Ecohaven (71 Murray Street) on Friday afternoons and Saturdays. Phone 03 6234 6454
