The driest inhabited continent on Earth

cottonpic.jpgShould we grow cotton in Australia?  65% of our precious water is used in agriculture. ecoLinen organic cotton is grown on Indian organic farms by highly experienced farmers. There are no pesticides or herbicides used on these farms and since India has monsoonal rain, growing cotton crops doesn't tax the land the way it does in Australia.

When left alone, insects and plants in nature keep each other in check by thriving off of one another. Organic farming uses this diversity to its advantage and keeps fields in balance using natural predators against pests. Without chemical treatments, the plants grow stronger and are better able to fend for themselves. As a result organic fibre is stronger than conventional cotton.

Traces of chemicals used to eliminate weeds and unwanted insects in cotton crops can remain in fabrics, even after washing. Our skin is absorbing and releasing chemicals from our environment all day every day. Some chemicals are stored and collected in our bodies, this is called bioaccumulation.

Bioaccumulation of chemicals can weaken your immune system. Some affects show in our nervous system, respiratory system, headaches, dizziness and irritations to the eyes, nose and throat along with difficulties with sleep, concentration and memory. To maintain your wellbeing and not place further stress on your body, it is recommended that you sleep in bed linen free of toxic dyes or cotton sprayed with harsh chemicals.
